Understanding the Basics of Search Engine Optimization (SEO) - Part One

No matter what business you are in, or for what purpose you have created a website, search engine optimization, or SEO as it is commonly known, is key to creating a successful website. In order for you to create a website that is picked up by search engines, you will need to understand the importance of “keywords” and how they influence search engines.

There are five things we should address first:

SEO Networker Tip No. 1 – Search Engines Don’t Rank Websites, They Rank Web Pages

When you understand that each web page is important in and of itself, and not the website as a whole, you can begin to develop content for your website that will work to your best advantage. Each page of your website should be focused on one keyword or keyword phrase and have a unique title, a description and keyword meta tags. Keeping your focus as narrow as possible on each page will achieve better results. Consider a combination of keywords that people might use to search for your website and use them to develop effective content. Creating a separate page even for the combined keywords can be beneficial as well.

SEO Networker Tip No. 2 – Always Create Your Content with the Visitor in Mind

Many website owners have made the mistake of focusing so much on keywords and search engine rankings, however, that they lose sight of their audience. Your visitors should always remain your central focus when developing content for your website. You want to keep them interested while they are there and willing to come back again and again. If you create content that brings you a number one position with search engines, but lose your customers, your efforts will have been wasted. So when you work on SEO content for your website, always keep your visitors in mind.

SEO Networker Tip No. 3 – Don’t Overdo Keyword Optimization

When developing your website content for search engine optimization avoid using too many different keywords. Five to ten keywords per website is generally sufficient. Do make sure you include the keywords in your meta tags. Good content that adequately supports your keywords will improve your chances of moving up in the search engine rankings. Having one page rank first is better than having three or four pages with second and third rankings.

SEO Networker Tip No. 4 – Keep Your Content High Quality And Update Often

When you add new content to your site, the search engines will scan it and re-index it, and this is extremely beneficial to your page rankings. New content also keeps your readers interested and that is your most important objective. Keep the content relevant, interesting and enjoyable for your readers. They are the most important element in the equation.

SEO Networker Tip No. 5 – Think of Your Links as the Story Line of Your Site

Links are an important part of search engine optimization. Incoming links improve your search engine ranking, but they need to be of high quality; one way links from sites whose content is similar to your own are the best – and the more popular these sites are, the better the link. Don’t try to build a large number of links to your site all at once. Links which are built organically over time are considered to be the most valuable by search engines.
